CORN pads-to-condom maker SSL International has confirmed it is in talks that may lead to a takeover of the business.

SSL, which makes Scholl footcare products and Durex condoms, has not revealed who it is in discussions with.

But household products group Reckitt Benckiser is considering making a £566m bid for the company, according to a national Sunday newspaper report.

Reckitt has not yet decided whether to proceed, but is drawing up plans for a bid and is monitoring the situation, the report said.

In a statement issued yesterday, SSL said: "Further to recent Press speculation, SSL confirms it is in preliminary discussions that may or may not lead to an offer for the group. A further announcement will be made in due course."

A Reckitt Benckiser spokesman declined to comment, saying the company did not respond to speculation.

SSL employs more than 200 staff at a plant in Peterlee which makes Scholl products.

The firm, based in Knutsford in Cheshire, said earlier this year that it planned to sell its medical business and industrial gloves operation.
