FOUR nurses received first class honours degrees from the University of Sunderland yesterday.
Kay Simpson, 37, Julie McHugh, 38, Brigid Marron, 47, and Alison Stewart, 42, gained BSc (Hons) Nursing degrees.
The part-time graduates worked full-time at hospitals and health centres in Sunderland and South Tyneside while studying in the evening.
South Tyneside District Hospital nurse Ms Marron, from Hebburn, said: "It was very hard at times. Juggling study, work and family life has taken its toll.
"However, it has all been worth it. Especially after we found out we had received firsts.
