A BOGUS official stole hundreds of pounds after tricking his way into a pensioner's home.
The man called at a home in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, and entered through a back door that had been left open.
He found the occupant, an 81-year-old man, in the living room.
He asked the pensioner if he wanted to join a free lottery and demanded to see his pension book.
He then asked for a cup of tea and was taken into the kitchen, then said he needed to use the lavatory and went upstairs.
He then searched the pensioner's bedroom and stole two wallets, containing several hundred pounds and various bank cards.
The offence took place on Tuesday, July 8, at about 3.30pm.
House-to-house inquiries by police revealed that same man had called at another home in the area that day, but the occupant. a 74-year-old woman, refused to let him in.
The thief is described as white, in his 20s, of slim build, with short dark hair and a pale complexion.
He was clean shaven and was wearing a navy blue pullover with a logo on the chest and dark trousers. He did not have a local accent.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Constable Damon Devine, at Stanley police station, on (01207) 232144.
