PLANS to build an Olympic-size swimming pool in the region have moved a step closer.

The Sport England Council has confirmed that the joint bid, by Newcastle City Council and Northumbria University, to build a 50-metre pool in the city centre, has been endorsed. It will now be considered by the North-East office of Sport England.

Newcastle city councillor Ged Bell said: "We are aware that Sport England has had to make some very difficult decisions about funding sch-emes such as ours throughout the country.

"This is why we are so pleased to be told that our scheme meets the organisation's new criteria."

He added: "We remain convinced that, if built, the pool will benefit the region's best swimmers and the general public alike."
