MARINERS will soon be able to surf as they sail at a North-East marina.
Sailors with laptops at Hartlepool Marina can now access the latest weather reports or tidal information on the Internet or keep in touch with their office, without having to make connections through their mobile phone or using wires.
The service is provided by Square Mile International and is the first step in its plans to bring wireless networks to 1,000 marinas.
Dominic Killinger, managing director of Square Mile, said: "The new network will let sailors use their laptops to gather information about the marina they are visiting, including chandleries, marine services, places to eat, as well checking the latest weather reports, tidal and chart information from the Internet."
Yacht and motorboat users can access the system through their existing laptop with a subscription of £25 per month or £250 a year, or they can buy a 24-hour voucher from the marina office for £15.
