TELEVISION presenter Loyd Grossman yesterday visited the North-East museum he believes is among the best in the world.

Mr Grossman is chairman of the Campaign for Museums and he was at Segedunum Roman fort, in Wallsend, North Tyneside, to launch the attractions Friends scheme.

The Friends group aims to get visitors to the fort more actively involved with the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and the surrounding area.

Since opening in June 2000, the museum has attracted more than 150,000 visitors.

Mr Grossman nominated Segedunum in a list of top ten museums world-wide compiled by experts in 2001.

Bill Griffiths, museum curator, said: "It has been an amazing three years since opening, and it is very exciting to see our Friends group being formed.

"I am really looking forward to working with them to develop the site and museum still further."
