PLANS to build an Olympic-size swimming pool in the region have moved a step closer.
The Sport England Council has confirmed that the joint bid, by Newcastle City Council and Northumbria University, to build a 50-metre pool in the city centre, has been endorsed. It will now be considered by the North-East office of Sport England.
Newcastle city councillor Ged Bell said: "We remain convinced that, if built, the pool will benefit the region's best swimmers and the general public alike.
