NEWLY-CROWNED English Schools 400m hurdles intermediate boys champion Craig Crawford-Glanville misses today's big schools international in Cardiff because of a pre-booked family holiday. But his place goes to Washington schoolmate Lewis Robson, who won the bronze medal behind him in last week's championships in Sheffield.

Crawford-Glanville, who won the junior boys 400m flat championship two years ago, switched to the hurdles and won in a personal best time of 53.68 secs, with Robson clocking 54.34 secs.

Durham's other gold medallists were Gateshead Harrier Chris Parr, who won the senior 3,000m in a personal-best 8 mins 20.25 secs and junior girls discus thrower Ashley Maddison, who reached 35.65 metres. Durham's other medallists were Graham Jackson, third in the senior triple jump (14.72m) and Emma Morris, who won the bronze medal in the senior high jump with a clearance of 1.66m.

Northumberland, who will host next year's English Schools Championships at Gateshead International Stadium, had to be content with two medals, Ryan McLeod - son of former Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Mike McLeod - finishing runner-up to Parr in the 3,000m (3:53.41) while Morpeth's Kirk Wilson was third in the senior 1500m (3:47.78).

Cleveland Schools' Gavin Hill improved his own personal best by six metres to win the intermediate boys discus with a throw of 52.50 metres, while Daniel Dean, who set a new championship record of 21.44 secs winning his heat of the intermediate 200m, finished third in the final in a time of 21.82 secs.

* Chester-le-Street AC's Martin Scaife won the New Marske Summer 5K in 14 mins 46 secs, beating Hartlepool Burn Road Harrier Mark Armstrong by over a minute. The women's winner was Loftus AC's Catherine Hare (17.54).

* Wearsider Mark Christie added the Scottish senior men's pole vault title to his AAA under-20 championship with a clearance of 4.90m.

* Hartlepool Burn Road Harriers' Old Monks race at High Hesleden was won by Mark Donkin. The over-40 and over-50 prizes also went to Sunderland clubmen Jeff Laws and Vin Tindle.
