WEARY security guard David Lambert was pulled over by police - for cycling too slowly.

Mr Lambert, 58, had just finished an eight-hour shift and was struggling to get up a hill on his way home when a police patrol car pulled alongside him.

He listened in amazement as the officer told him he was riding too slowly and warned him to hurry up.

Mr Lambert, of York, said: "I just couldn't believe it. I was going as fast as I could.

"I had finished a long shift on the premises I look after and it was late at night.

"On my way home, there is a steep hill and I had just reached the top of it and was getting my breath back.

"I was cycling along when a police car pulled up and travelled alongside me for a while.

"Then the policeman shouted to me to pull over on to the verge. I had no idea what was going on. I had my lights on and I wasn't wobbling around, so I was baffled.

"He stood in front of me and asked where I was going. I told him I had finished my shift and was on my way home.

"Then he said: 'You were travelling too slowly - get yourself off home'."

A spokesman for York police said there had been a large number of burglaries in the Acomb area recently and the officer involved may have felt Mr Lambert was acting suspiciously.
