CHILDREN in Ferryhill have said goodbye to two of the town's longest-serving headteachers.

John Hepplewhite and John Denham are both retiring after long careers in teaching.

Mr Hepplewhite, who comes from Ferryhill, is stepping down after 30 years as headteacher of Cleves Cross Primary School.

A Sunderland supporter, he took over as headteacher in 1973 just days before his team won the FA Cup, following a spell as deputy headteacher at Kelloe Primary School.

He said: "I was brought up in the area and I still like to think I have a good understanding of the people, the children and the background they come from.

"I have been so well supported by the community, the parents, the children and governors. I can almost say that while I've been here I've had almost anything I've ever wanted in terms of job satisfaction."

Staff organised for a stretch limousine to transport him to a cabaret evening to mark his retirement.

Mr Denham is retiring after 15 years at Dean Bank Primary School.

He has been a Newton Aycliffe resident for more than 50 years, and spent many years teaching in Shildon before taking over as headteacher at Dean Bank in 1988.

He said: "Our kids work hard and play hard and I am leaving a good team of good teachers. They work hard and do their best for the children."

Mr Denham hopes to spend more time with his family, watching rugby and travelling.
