A WIDE range of artwork went on public display yesterday, as museum bosses appealed for more support.

The exhibition in the refurbished west wing of Darlington Railway Centre and Museum was opened by the Mayor, Councillor Ron Lewis.

It features four displays of railway art and has been heralded as a significant development, ahead of the museum making a bid for National Lottery funding. The opening came as the museum launched a search for volunteer helpers.

The volunteers will be able to work from as little as half a day a month, with duties including giving information to visitors, explaining exhibits and helping to create the atmosphere of bygone times by dressing up in period costume.

Curator John Wilkes said: "With our new gallery space opening and new exhibits, such as Blue Peter, visitor numbers are increasing at the centre and any extra help from new volunteers will be most welcome.

"There is already a small team of volunteers helping at the museum and they find it a really rewarding way of using their spare time."
