A MURAL created by young artists in memory of a former mayor has been unveiled.

The 100-ft painting depicting Spennymoor through the seasons has been installed along the John Kitson Archway, which runs from the town hall car park to the main street.

Children and adults gathered last week to see Spennymoor Town Mayor Councillor Elsie Summerson and Sedgefield Borough Mayor Councillor George Gray unveil the archway mural.

Coun Summerson said: "It is a magnificent mural. It is colourful and optimistic, with lots of images we can all relate to.

"It enhances part of the town and makes it more inviting for residents and visitors.

"A lot of hard work has gone into it and everyone involved should be proud.

"The project brought together schools and groups to contribute to the community."

Artist Frances Connolly worked with youngsters from the area to design the mural.

They met at Spennymoor Youth and Community Centre to paint it in vivid colours on to marine plyboard which should last for at least ten years.

The project was sponsored by Spennymoor Town Council, Sedgefield Borough Council, Sedgefield Borough Business Service, Mitie Property Services and the centre.

It was created to commemorate the life and work of popular mayor Councillor John Kitson, who died last year, aged 82.
