ONLY days after the funeral of Lance Corporal Ben Hyde, the Royal Military Policeman (RMP) killed in Iraq, his parents took part in a memorial parade in their home town yesterday.

Sandra and John Hyde joined the procession in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, in remembrance of all servicemen and women who have died since 1945.

Sea cadets from Harrogate led the march from the County Hall Memorial Garden to Elder Road followed by veterans from the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.

"It was a very successful parade and more than 150 participants ended up in Elders pub with a buffet and a raffle," said organiser and former soldier Trevor Kershaw, of Bedale.

The 69-year-old spent 15 years in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, serving Korea, Malaya, Cyprus and Suez.

He successfully campaigned to have a memorial stone placed in the grounds of County Hall last year for those from the combined services who had died since the Second World War.

"I hope now that this parade becomes an annual event in memory of all soldiers, sailors and airmen that we have lost," said Mr Kershaw.

Mr and Mrs Hyde were joined on yesterday's midday parade by two members of the RMP, wearing their distinctive red caps.
