Yorkshire have dropped star overseas batsman Yuvraj Singh from the Championship match against Gloucestershire which begins at Cheltenham tomorrow

It is the only time that Yorkshire have axed an overseas player since Sachin Tendulkar became the first to be signed by the county in 1992.

Yuvraj has had a wretched time since joining Yorkshire in mid-May and in ten Championship innings the Indian has managed only 127 runs, 56 of which came against Durham at Headingley.

Five of Yuvraj's last six visits to the crease have resulted in single figure dismissals and Yorkshire feel the time has come to act.

Gavin Hamilton, who has still not got over the psychological problems which are preventing him from bowling, comes in solely as a batsman.

In Yorkshire's three-day game against Bradford-Leeds Universities' Centre of Excellence last month, Hamilton blasted an unbeaten 143 in his first senior appearance of the season and in Yorkshire Seconds match with Derbyshire last week he opened and blazed his way to 219 not out.

Director of cricket Geoff Cope, said: "Yuvraj has been left out purely because he has had a lean time and has not made many runs.

"Chris Taylor and Hamilton have both amassed a lot of runs for the seconds and it was hard to choose between them but Hamilton is a middle-order batsman and that is where we need runs from.

"Taylor is a natural opener but it is hard to fit him in because Matthew Wood and Stephen Fleming have both been playing well."
