A YOUNG woman was knocked to the ground by a thief trying to steal her handbag.
The 19-year-old was walking along Greenfields Road, Bishop Auckland, at 3am on Saturday when she was punched from behind.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident after the man ran away empty-handed.
They are looking for the drivers of two vehicles which were seen in the area, believing these might have frightened the attacker.
The man was described as white, of medium-build, with untidy, dark brown hair.
He was wearing a dark sweatshirt and dark tracksuit bottoms.
Detective Sergeant Brian Wilkes, of Bishop Auckland police, said: "I would ask people to be extra careful when walking home at that time and, where possible, always have somebody with you.''
Witnesses to the incident or anyone who thinks they might know the identity of the man can contact Det Sgt Wilkes on (01388) 603566.
