POLICE are stepping up patrols in Harrogate's Valley Gardens following a sharp rise in youth disorder and crime.

Police said the problems have coincided with the school holidays and that extra patrols are being backed up by the town's six newly-appointed police community support officers.

One of the most alarming developments has been targeted attacks on lone individuals by gangs of up to 20 teenagers.

Other incidents have involved thefts, under-age drinking, drug taking, and cash being stolen from two 12-year-old boys.

Councillor David Simister, who has previously raised concerns about anti-social behaviour in the gardens, said: "There is a problem and it needs tackling.

"I am pleased that the police are increasing their presence. We need to get tough and make some prosecutions."

Meanwhile, Detective Constable Paul Somerville has warned parents to be alert and to be aware of adults watching youngsters, taking photographs of them or using video cameras to track their movements.

A man was spotted acting suspiciously near the paddling pool during lunch-time last Monday. But he ran off when challenged.

He was described as 5ft 6in, aged 40 to 45, balding, with thick-rimmed glasses. He wore a blue short-sleeved top with an eagle print on the front and blue jeans with turn-ups. He was seen driving off in a silver car after running away.
