German supermarket chain Lidl has confirmed its interest in a new store in Colburn.

Richmondshire District Council has received a detailed application for a store on the site of The Scorpion nightclub, which would be demolished. The land is earmarked for redevelopment, although the local authority had been hoping for industrial rather than retail use.

SUMMER FAIR: The Knaresborough branch of the Inner Wheel Club holds its summer fair on Wednesday. Stalls at the Gracious Street Methodist Church will be selling cakes, preserves, crafts, books and toys. Doors open at 9.30am.

CRAFT WORK: Rural crafts displays will take place tomorrow. Peter Berry will show the art of wood-carving at the Aysgarth National Park Centre from 10.30am. The Dales Countryside Museum, in Hawes, hosts workshops in spinning and woolcraft from 2pm.

DOG SHOW: The Vale of Mowbray branch of the RSPCA is holding its annual dog show from noon on Sunday, August 17. It takes place at the Parochial Hall, Sowerby, near Thirsk, and includes a heat of the national Dog of the Year contest. For information, call (01845) 523605.

RAP WORKSHOPS: Two libraries in York are encouraging 11 to 16-year-olds to make some noise on Wednesday as part of their Lively Library programme. The music workshops, run by local rap artists New Flesh, will be held at New Earswick library between 10am and noon, and Tang Hall library between 2pm and 4pm.

CROSSING CLOSURE: Motorists in Ryedale are warned about the temporary closure of Kirkham Abbey level crossing due to essential maintenance work, from 10.30pm on Saturday until 9am on Sunday. An alternative route will be signposted.
