RETIRED haulage contractor Maurice Jackson will this weekend proudly show off a 2.5 tonne traction engine which he named after his mother.

The 1924 Lady Mary will be one of 200 entries at the 10th annual rally organised by the Kirkleatham Vehicle and Engine Rally Association, at Kirkleatham Museum, Redcar.

Five thousand visitors are expected at the event on Saturday and Sunday.

Mr Jackson, 70, named his steam-powered engine after his mother after she lent him the money to buy it.

He said he was very proud of the machine, adding: "I won't tell you how much she cost, but she's worth a lot more now.

"I've been a lover of steam all my life and the rally is really good. There's great comradeship."

Attractions will include traction engines, miniature steamers, motorcycles and classic cars, craft and trade stalls, and a Harry Potter fancy dress competition for children.

Before presenting awards to exhibitors, association chairman Malcolm Linsley will hand over two £500 cheques to the Katie Trust and the Macmillan Nurses.

He said: "We are a charitable organisation run by volunteers and it's just built up over the years.

"We began in 1994 as a one-day rally and it has grown from there to this weekend event, and because it is our tenth year, we wanted to give a little bit more back."

Admission to the rally, which is open from 10am to 5pm each day is £2.50 for adults, £1 for pensioners and free for accompanied under-16s. For more details, contact the museum on (01642) 479500.
