AN open-air show where Abba fans can sing-a-long to their favourite songs will be staged in the North-East for the first time.

Entertainment company Sing-A-Long-A has been signed up to perform Abba hits at the Darlington Festival.

It will be the first time the show has been performed outdoors in the region.

Sing-A-Long-A tribute shows have been highly successful when they have been staged at the Civic Theatre, in the town.

The line-up at the Darlington Festival, over the August Bank Holiday weekend, includes a number of international acts.

The fun starts on Saturday, August 23, at 7.30pm, when Century FM launches the event in the Market Place, followed by Sing-A-long-A Abba.

The tribute show will feature songs such as Waterloo and Dancing Queen. A prize will be given to the best dressed member of the audience.

Sunday's theme is world music. From 12.30pm, there will be free music workshops for children in Market Square, when youngsters can be a DJ, play the drums, blow the didgereedo and even make an instrument.

Street theatre performances from international entertainers will also be in the square.

Organiser Jeff Dawson said: "This year's festival is bigger and better than ever. We've secured performances from some of the best entertainers from around the globe.

"Building upon the success of previous festivals, we are confident that we will deliver the best one yet."

On the Sunday evening, Latin band Viramundo and South African group Batani Marimba will provide entertainment.

Bank Holiday Monday will see street performers during the day and at 7.30pm The Imposters will perform the Ultimate Sixties Show.
