Famous faces from Coronation Street visited the region at the weekend to play in a charity football match, writes Craig Stoddart.

Staged at Northalleton Town Football Club's ground on Sunday, the actors who play Ashley (Steven Arnold), Kirk (Andy Wymnet), Tyrone (Alan Hassall pictured right), Aiden (Dean Ashton) and Patrick (Trevor Dwyer-Lynch) all turned out in aid of the Percey Hedley Foundation school in Newcastle.

On a glorious sunny day over 500 spectators were in attendance as the actors took on a team of former Darlington FC players. The television actors were playing their second game in the region having played in another charity game at Darlington's Feethams ground in April. As well as current Quaker, Neil Maddison, the Darlington side included Kevan Smith, Mark Prudhoe, Andy Toman, Steve Tupling, David Speedie, Dale Anderson, Phil Brumwell and Paul Ward but the ITV1 soap stars managed a 3-3 draw with the television personalities winning a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Arnold, taking time off from playing Fred Elliott's son, scored the winning penalty after Dwyer-Lynch, who plays a taxi driver on the Street, stole the show with some excellent saves.

Wheelchair-bound Paul Hodgson, who organised the day, attended the Percey Hedley Foundation so was delighted with estimated proceeds £2,000. He said: "I would like to say a big thank you for those fans that went to the charity match at Nothallerton."
