LADY Bear began slowly in the £100,000 William Hill Showcase Mile at Glorious Goodwood last Friday, but Paul Hanagan cleverly kept her sweet and rode her strongly to overtake and beat a classy field for Richard Fahey.

The trainer was in the middle of his move from the Butterwick yard owned by his father-in-law Peter Easterby to the Musley Bank complex formerly owned by Colin and Carol Tinkler, with its 38 acres just off the A64 Malton to York road.

The trainer said the rain had helped the filly and owner Arthur Campbell said he'd backed her ante post at 40-1.

In the prize money behind Lady Bear was Winning Venture for David Nicholls, fourth, and Mark Johnston's Takes Tutu, sixth.

Fahey landed a Nottingham race the same night with veteran George Duffield partnering Kings College Boy. Duffield is in cracking form and a Newcastle four-timer on Wednesday for southern trainers showed him at his best.

Hanagan was back in the saddle at Carlisle's evening meeting on Monday on Fahey's winner, Bo McGinty, a useful looking juvenile.

Nicholls had 12 of the 21 in the Stewards' Sprint on Friday in Sussex, but a former inmate, Undeterred, owned by Peter Savill, won the race for the in-form David Barron and jockey Dean Mernagh. Barron had landed his 50th winner of the term last Thursday night at Musselburgh with Baylaw Star.

Dandy had recommended the move for Undeterrred from Sessay to Barron's Maunby yard - and may now rue the day! The winner beat Goodwood campaigner Zuhair a short head, with Sir Don third, Flak Jacket fifth and Ballybunion sixth for the Sessay team.

Nicholls sent out another handful on Saturday in the Stewards' Cup, but Fire Up The Band, second, and Onlytime Will Tell, fifth, could not get their heads in front.

However, up at Thirsk, amateur Emily Jones won on the Nicholls-trained Brecongill Lad, a first win for three years for the old-timer, bred by Sally Hall. Nicholls has Mr Savill's Proud Native, though, and sent this down to Bath to win under Darryll Holland on Tuesday.

Saturday's final Goodwood day saw Patrick Haslam in the money with Alpine Special in the Vodafone Nursery and Lynda Ramsden's Cape Royal was second in the Rated Stakes over five furlongs later. Kieren Fallon had the ride on this, but had fared better the night before at Newmarket for Haslam on Moulin de Mougins.

John Quinn sent out the surprise of last Thursday's Newcastle card when 50-1 juvenile Coxmoore (261-1 on the Tote) won easily. Wilf Storey's The Wizard Mul was also long odds at 20s, but won well under Natalia Gemelova. The Muggleswick trainer also won at Musselburgh that evening, another apprentice, Derek McGaffin, in the plate. Quinn is in great form and Winthorpe won at Doncaster on Saturday.

Brian Ellison has also been in good form and daughter Lorraine, an amateur rider, won for him on Mr Fortywinks, while young Tom Eaves partnered Conquering Love at Thirsk. Tim Easterby had winners at Thirsk and at Chester's Sunday meeting, Kevin Darley getting a good tune out of Santisima Trinidad round the Roodee.

Paul Hanagan rode a welcome first winner for more than a year at Catterick for Allan Dickman, who is based at Warthill but moving to Lynda Ramsden's yard, vacated last week by Iona Craig. Linda Stubbs also won at Catterick, but the rider was claimer Luke Fletcher and not Robert Winston, who gave up his rides due to feeling unwell in the heat.
