INTERNATIONAL stars are preparing for an open- air classical music concert in County Durham this weekend.

The Northern Proms will be held on Saturday at Durham County Cricket Club ground, in Chester-le-Street, and will feature renowned brass band conductor Major Peter Parkes, and opera singers including Graeme Danby and Bethany Halliday.

Bethany, who is seven months pregnant, has worked with the English National Opera and British Youth Opera. Major Parkes has directed military and brass bands for more than 100 albums and on Saturday will be conducting the Riverside Band.

The music will have a Northern theme and pays tribute to County Durham's mining heritage.

To round off the event there will be a fireworks display.

Organisers have released 100 premium seats for the event and are allowing ticket-holders to upgrade for £5. The balcony seats are available on a first-come first-serve basis.

A grassed area in front of the stage will be available for concert-goers to bring tables, chairs and picnics to help get into the Proms mood.

The concert starts at 6.30pm and tickets can be obtained online at www.northernproms.co.uk, or contact 0191-387 5151 during office hours.

Tickets for adults are from £20 and juniors from £10. Family tickets are also available.
