A CLUB steward yesterday admitted stealing almost £9,000 from a hospital's recreation club over six months.

Julie Dykes, 31, of Mowden Terrace, Darlington, pleaded guilty to stealing £8,914 from Darlington Health Authority, at South Durham Magistrates' Court.

The court heard that Dykes, a married mother-of-one, got a job as a steward at Darlington Memorial Hospital's staff recreation club in January last year.

Part of her duties were cash-handling and banking for the club.

In July last year, her employers became concerned after the club treasurer was informed by its accountants that there were discrepancies in the books.

The court heard that when Dykes was asked about the figures, she said: "It is time, I know I am in a lot of trouble."

After police investigated, she admitted stealing the money, which she said she had spent on household items.

Graham Hunsley, in mitigation, said: "In June and July last year, she was finding it hard to make ends meet and that was when she borrowed some money. Within a short time, she borrowed again and put it back.

"She took £50 or £100 every couple of weeks and things escalated from there.

"She has not spent this money on any sort of enhanced living.

"She has not got expensive habits, such as gambling. The money has gone to the household budget and to provide day-to-day for her family."

Dykes was remanded on unconditional bail and the case was adjourned until September 4 for sentencing.
