From this newspaper 50 years ago. - The fact that ten entries have been received for the Wensleydale cheese class at Aysgarth Show today suggests a revival of cheese-making in dale farmhouses. Although there is a cheese factory at Hawes, visitors seem to prefer cheeses made at farms. Ballafield Farm, between Carperby and Askrigg, had a reputation for home-made cheese and 30 years ago, the late Mr. Ralph Daykin, who farmed there, gave a cup to Aysgarth Show to be won either three times in succession or four times in all. In 1927 it was won outright but Mr. Daykin replaced it and so helped to preserve the link with this famous cheese. With an increase of entries from 500 to 700, the success of this year's show seems assured.

From this newspaper 25 years ago. - The shape of the new channel in the Tees above Croft Bridge is now plain to be seen. The Yorkshire bank is almost finished apart from seeding and the new sweep of the bend brings into view the bridge over the Skerne in the Northallerton Road. This turns out to have an attractive arch of stone that has been hidden for some generations. Unfortunately the scheme is not all advantages. The service water drains from the other side of the road have been blocked. Residents of the Tees View are having to pump out their cellars which otherwise would fill with water. However the Northumbrian Water Authority has the matter in mind and will attend to the trouble.
