A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build a new incinerator at a slaughterhouse seems likely to go ahead despite objections from people living nearby.

The North York Moors National Park Authority planning committee is recommended to approve the scheme for the Stable House Industrial Estate at Charltons, near Guisborough.

Operator Edward Noddings has applied for permission to construct a larger incinerator on the site where a slaughterhouse and meat recovery business has operated for many years.

He said the incinerator was needed to comply with European Union and Government regulations.

Mr Noddings has already told the committee that during all the years the business has operated, it has never received any complaints.

Chief planning officer Val Dilcock acknowledged local people's concerns but said that after an investigation, it was not felt that the incinerator would harm the character of the area or the residents' health.

Objectors claimed that the proposal threatens the countryside.

The Environment Protection in East Cleveland group has also called for refusal, fearing that further developments will follow and saying that the complex already has a visual impacton the valley in which it stands..

There are several letters of support and the plan is recommended for approval with 13 conditions on Thursday.
