PLANS to establish a walking group for visually impaired people in Darlington are pressing ahead.
Social services are working with the town's countryside team to support the organisation, which has already staged its first walk.
Darlington Borough Council says such a group is much-needed because there is a lack of suitable routes and surfaced paths, making it difficult for visually impaired people to explore rural areas.
Under proposals, there would be a programme of walks throughout the spring and summer.
A trained guide would act as "speaking eyes", giving descriptions of terrain, wildlife, flora and fauna.
Environment director John Buxton said: "The programme, once complete, will provide a significant number of people with their first opportunity to enjoy the countryside on their doorsteps.
"By using the facilities that have been created by the council over the last few years, a group of people previously excluded from quiet recreation in the countryside will now get the chance to experience its delights."
