A CAMPAIGN to raise the profile of Darlington's nature reserves has received a boost.

Darlington Borough Council has been awarded a grant by English Nature to generate interest in the sites.

The town presently has three local nature reserves but expects another five to be declared in the near future.

The council's environment director, John Buxton, is confident that the cash injection will play a big part in their future success.

He said: "The award is part of a £20,000 project to provide additional on-site interpretation boards on some of the new and existing reserves, as well as leaflets and teaching aids for schools.

"These will inform visitors of interesting features found on the reserves, the history and wildlife, and indications of how the reserves are being managed in order to keep them as a great place to visit."
