SUNDERLAND'S win in the best large city category meant it pipped deadly rival Newcastle, which won an award of merit.

The judges said they were very impressed with the enthusiasm of all concerned with the entry.

They praised the many attractive floral displays and gardens and also said they were impressed with the steps that had been taken to encourage commercial premises to display hanging baskets.

"The whole city seemed to be caught up in an enthusiasm for Northumbria in Bloom," they said.

Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Juliana Heron, who received the Co-op Trophy, said: "It's great to be back amongst the silverware.

"And I can assure you, there will be more to follow, or it won't be for the want of trying."

Cabinet member for culture, arts, sports and leisure Councillor Mel Speding paid compliment to Sunderland's parks department staff for their energy, hard work and enthusiasm.

He said: "The award reflects well on all members of the staff."

Sunderland last won the Northumbria in Bloom best large city category in 2001.

It was also a winner in 1998, 1999, and in 2000, when it won the Britain in Bloom award best large city prize.
