A PREGNANT teenager who kicked a fellow reveller at a house party escaped jail yesterday.

Newcastle Crown Court heard that mother-of-one Kayleigh Chapman, 18, joined in the attack at a New Year's Eve party in Pallion, Sunderland, after boyfriend Stephen Sim and friend Richard Greig started a fight.

The fight broke out in St Lukes Road when Greig and Sim started arguing with another group of males and were asked to leave the party.

Stephen Duffield, prosecuting, told the court that Greig threw a bottle at one of the other drinkers and a fight broke out.

Mr Duffield said: "There was an attack on one of the drinkers and while he was on the floor he was seen to be kicked three or four times in the head and face by Chapman."

Robin Denny, in mitigation on behalf of Greig, said he was upset at the news of his father contracting cancer.

John Evans, for Chapman, said she was a mother to a young son and was currently eight months pregnant. He said: "She clearly has a drink problem."

Chris Gumsley, for Sim said he over-reacted through drink.

He said: "He acted, most of all, out of stupidity."

Chapman, of Parkhurst Road, admitted assault and was given a 12-month community rehabilitation order, to help with her drink problems.

Sim, 18, was also sentenced to a community order for two years. with a condition he attends the intensive Think First Programme. He admitted the assault.

Greig, also 18, of Flax Square, who is serving a six-month sentence for the breach of a court order, was jailed for nine months.

He pleaded guilty to two common assaults, a charge of affray and possession of an offensive weapon.
