A HOT summer has helped a North-East gardener grow an exotic fruit.

Deolinda Ashmore planted a pineapple-top two years ago but didn't hold out much hope of it growing in the chilly North-East.

But to her surprise, the fruit has now reached impressive proportions and is almost ripe.

A second plant is beginning to bear fruit.

Pineapples can be grown in the UK but they usually need to be kept in a greenhouse.

Mrs Ashmore, of Pierremont Gardens, Darlington, has grown hers on a windowsill.

Sue Thompson, of the Royal Horticultural Society, said it was quite a feat.

"Growing a pineapple is not an easy business," she said.

She said the exceptional heat this summer would have worked in the plant's favour, bringing it to maturation faster.

Mrs Ashmore said: "Although it's ready to eat now I don't want to destroy two years of hard work."
