CAMPAIGNERS for a town council in Willington have set up a steering group.
Chairman is Simon Tasker, secretary Pauile Moger and Press officer Councillor Brian Myers.
The move follows a public meeting in Willington Methodist Church attended by more than 40 people.
Coun Myers said: "Willington needs a town council to represent the residents at the closest level to the community. Latest Government emphasis is on bottom-up local government, and this in itself is a real shift in favour of local community democracy.
"The steering group are pressing ahead. The next stage will be to devise a consultation process that will involve a leaflet drop into every house outlining the cost and benefits of having a town council. Willington has been the Cinderella of Wear Valley for too long. Giving power to local people will made a huge difference."
