GOLFING hotels group De Vere boosted turnover last year despite challenging market conditions.

The operator, which includes Slaley Hall, pictured, Northumberland, and the Belfry, in North Warwickshire, in its portfolio, was forced to switch its focus after suffering from a drop in demand for conference facilities.

Instead, it concentrated on lower margin leisure breaks to fill rooms. Turnover was up 6.1 per cent in the past year.

The company, which is based in Warrington, Cheshire, said the difficult conditions were continuing to place some pressure on margins but turnover was up in its upmarket De Vere Hotels brand and its mid-market Village operation.

The group owns 21 De Vere hotels, including 13 with golf courses, as well as 14 Villages and 15 branches of Greens.
