SUNDERLAND footballer and Scottish International Kevin Kyle may face court proceedings after being arrested in a late-night incident in his home town.

Saturday's goal-scoring hero in Sunderland's 1-0 win at Sheffield United was one of two people arrested in the early hours of Sunday following a disturbance near a Turkish restaurant, in Stranraer, south-west Scotland.

A police report has been passed on to the Procurator Fiscal, who will decide if charges are to be brought against either men.

No one at the Stadium of Light could give any more details yesterday.

All the players had a day off, with Mick McCarthy's team not in action until next Tuesday due to the weekend international games.

The 22-year-old striker, capped eight times by Scotland, scored the winner for Sunderland for the second game running only hours before the alleged incident.

It is understood he then headed to his home town, where he used to work as a baggage handler on the Stranraer to Larne ferries.

Dumfries and Galloway Police confirmed an incident took place in the town in the early hours of Sunday.

A force spokesman said: "An incident did take place in Stranraer and two persons have been reported to the Procurator Fiscal."

Mr Kyle was unavailable for comment last night.
