HOUSEHOLDERS in Yarm and Eaglescliffe are being urged to make their homes more secure after a number of opportunist break-ins.

Police issued the warning after several tea-time burglaries, where houses have had windows or doors forced open.

Crime prevention officer Eddie Lincoln said extra patrols are being carried out in the area, but householders can help by ensuring their homes are not left in darkness.

He said: "These thieves are opportunists and if they believe people are at home they will move on.

"Leaving a light on or having a time switch that can activate lightness when darkness falls. If you are going out leave a radio playing. It all adds to the pretence the house is occupied.

"Keep an eye out for strangers in the area, particularly those behaving suspiciously. The prime time for break-ins is between 4pm and 11pm and many can be avoided with some simple precautions."
