A SCHOOL'S appeal for shoe boxes full of Christmas gifts for less fortunate children has been a big success.

Children from Hurworth School Maths and Computing College have taken part in Operation Christmas Child, organised by the Samaritan's Purse group.

Art teacher Clare Hagan and head of RE Michael McMonigle sent off for an information pack, which included a video.

Miss Hagan said: "We had two large assembles where we showed the video on a big screen, which had a powerful effect and it really took off from there."

Head boy and headgirl Lee Weeks and Tanya Atkinson, with their deputies Neil Best and Sally Kemble, also got involved in collecting items for the boxes.

The boxes are filled with toys, gifts, toiletries and other items which will be collected by the charity and distributed to children in need in almost 100 countries around the world.

Miss Hagan said: "It has been a fantastic response. We have got about 55 boxes so far and we are hoping to get at least another 30."
