Nestle Rowntree has announced that 150 workers are to be laid off at its York site, adding to 220 job losses announced in August.

The jobs will be lost on the Kit Kat, Aero and assortment lines.

But there was better news in Hartlepool as Garlands Call Centre announced it was to take on another 130 staff.

The jobs are a welcome reprieve for the area after the news last month that major employer and frozen food manufacturer Hibernia Foods had gone into receivership.

Garlands Call Centre already employs 1,200 in Hartlepool, along with 700 in Middlesbrough.

Management said the move proved the company was determined to buck the trend of moving call centres to India and the Far East.
