A CHARITY worker has set up an award scheme to recognise the work and dedication of volunteers.

Stella Kilvington, from Northallerton, wants to reward those who make a difference by giving their time and money to good causes.

An annual presentation will be made to a volunteer connected to a local registered charity or a branch of a national registered charity based in Northallerton, Romanby or Brompton. Volunteers do not have to live in the area, but the charity they work for must be based there.

Mrs Kilvington, who has been a charity worker for many years, said: "While I cannot do so much nationally, I can ensure that a small tribute is paid locally. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any organisation of a charitable nature. Their input is invaluable to their chosen charity, from the smooth running of regular meetings to a large fundraising event.

"We all know of someone who works all year round making, collecting and storing saleable items, the craftsmen and women, the ticket sellers, the street collector, the makers of cakes and preserves and those who cater and wash up afterwards."

Mrs Kilvington originally wanted the awards to be set up after her death, but has now changed her mind.

She said: "I decided it should go ahead as soon as possible because giving is one of life's pleasures that I would like to enjoy in my lifetime."

The charities should be connected to the health and welfare of residents in the UK.

Up to three people can be nominated per person and names should be put forward by December 31 each year.

The winner will be selected by a panel of voluntary workers and will receive a lead crystal and wood trophy, to keep for a year.

A presentation evening will take place in March next year, where Mrs Kilvington hopes all nominees will meet in a celebration of voluntary work.

Anyone wishing to make a nomination can contact Mrs Kilvington on (01609) 770340.
