AGE has proved no barrier to a group of glamorous grannies who have taken their inspiration from the Calendar Girls to raise money for charity.

Eleven residents and the warden of the Windsor Court sheltered housing scheme, in Darlington, are the stars of a calendar that is raising money for Cancer Research UK.

They came up with the project after discussing several potential fundraising ideas and watching the hit film Calendar Girls to see how the Rylstone Women's Institute members started the trend.

Glam Grans 2004 has a themed photograph for each month, with a variety of props ranging from cuddly tigers to beach balls and fur coats.

Warden Christine Smith took the photographs and modelled for one of the months, with women aged from 60 to 80 featuring in the others.

She said: "It has been tremendous fun, with the ladies really getting into the spirit of things and posing for the camera. We now have over eighty orders - well on our way towards our original target of 100.

"If we reach this target we will have raised around £120 for charity."
