AN amateur boxer has proved it is never too late to start in the sport, after winning his first bout aged 31.

Carl Hart, of Stanley, recently started training at the Booker Amateur Boxing Club (ABC), in nearby Catchgate.

He took part in his first amateur bout at an event in Stanley Central Working Men's Club and won on points.

His coach, Gary McCrory, brother of former world champion boxer Glenn McCrory, said: "Carl has left it a bit late for a serious career, but he proves that boxing is open to anybody, whatever age."

There were 14 fights on the bill, featuring three other Booker ABC boxers.

Steven Lambert, 16, from Lanchester, won his bout on points, while Carl Makepeace, 12, lost on a points decision.

Also fighting for the first time, Daniel Foggon, 21, of Stanley, won after the referee stopped the contest, in front of 100 family and friends in the audience.
