MORE than 8,000 children in Darlington will receive a Remembrance Day poppy from the mayor as he visits primary schools in the area this week.

Mayor Ron Lewis is visiting the schools as part of a scheme that has run for three years to give every local child a poppy.

A special assembly will also be held at each school, with a representative from the poppy appeal, in which children will learn about the background to the appeal.

Collection boxes will be distributed to all schools, and voluntary donations are welcomed from parents, carers and school employees.

Volunteers for this year's appeal are already collecting around Darlington and, for the first time, will use two vacant units in the Indoor Market as their base.

Coun Lewis said: "I feel it is especially important to educate the young about the appeal and the important lessons that can be learnt from our history."
