A GUISBOROUGH sports college today celebrates the official opening of £270,000 indoor and outdoor sports facilities.
Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP, Dr Ashok Kumar, will officially open the new floodlit synthetic pitch and refurbished sports hall at Laurence Jackson School today.
The new pitch, which will be used mainly for hockey and football, cost £195,000 and replaces the old all-weather pitch. The project received £100,000 from the Government, and a £45,000 grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. The school, which was granted sports college status in September 2002, raised the remaining £50,000 through fundraising events.
The 40-year-old sports hall had £57,000 of lottery money and £25,000 from school funds invested in new floor, changing rooms, decorating and refurbishment.
The pitch and sports hall are both available for use by sports groups in the community.
Dr Kumar said: "I am sure that these new facilities will help immeasurably in bringing forward a whole new generation of sportsmen and women to represent both the school and the area."
