Hetton Lyons CC have progressed to the fourth round of the FA Sunday Cup.

The Cricketers made the journey to Hull where they faced Smith and Nephew from the Hull Sunday League.

In the first half Hetton Lyons created many chances but these were seen off by an inspired keeper Phil Dobson. After a long period of pressure by Hetton early in the first half, with them winning a series of corners, the pressure paid off as Smith and Nephew conceded an own goal, Smith and Nephew centre half Lee Jackson headed into his own net from a Hetton corner leaving the home keeper stranded on 26 minutes.

Hetton went further Ahead less than a minute from the restart when George Woodhouse poked home from six yards. This sparked a revival from the hosts as they put pressure on Hetton to reduce the arrears. The pressure paid off in the 40th minute when the Hetton Lyons defence was breached by a strike from the Smith and Nephew winger Gareth Sewell.

The second half saw an inspired strike from Gareth Sewell for his second of the game to level the scores in the 47th minute. This led to an open game for both teams and a cracking tie for the many watching supporters. Hetton gained the upper hand in the 63 min when George Woodhouse added his second off the game putting the ball in the net from a very acute angle giving keeper Dobson no chance.

Smith and Nephew threw everything at the Hetton Lyons defence in the final minutes without any success, as Hetton held out well to earn a place in the last 32 of the competition.

Hetton Lyons have been rewarded for their win with a home draw against the Penrith and District Sunday League side, Penrith Greybull on November 30 at Eppleton Colliery Welfare, kick-off at 1pm.
