Two teams of senior golfers from Dinsdale Spa golf club recently enjoyed success in the final stages of a national seniors golf competition.

Having won through several match play knockout stages at regional and Northern level, the two teams both qualified for the final stages of the Seniors Golf Association Classic Plate played against teams from the rest of the country over three days at the Forest of Dean golf club in Gloucestershire.

Having beaten a team from Wyndelsham in the semi-final, the team, made up of golfers George Hazel, Bill Smith, Guy Studholme and Eric Hough, won a very tight and exciting final against players from Bargoed golf club near Caerphilly, to take the overall title.

Every one of the four matches in the final was only resolved on the 18th hole with Dinsdale team captain George Hazel capturing the last point for the team to win by two and a half points to Bargoed's one and a half points.

The other Dinsdale team comprising players Gordon Penman, Dennis Hodgson, Brian Watson and Ken Leybourne took overall third place.

Unfortunately, David Corcoran, who had led this team through the qualifying matches, was not able to play in these finals due to illness.

The competition organiser in congratulating the teams on their success confirmed that this was the first time in the history of the event that two teams from the same club had reached the final stages.
