EQUINE vet Simon Stirk has opened a new and specialist surgery for racehorses at Middleham.

The facility, at Middleham Equine Pool and Therapy Centre, opens this month and includes a specialist examination area for diagnostic work; radiography; ultra-sound and nuclear bone scanning equipment; an operating theatre with a padded floor and walls, and a hydraulic operating table which can be lowered to floor level.

Middleham is home to about 600 racehorses and many livery yards, which have some of the best horses in the country.

Mr Stirk, whose clients include well-known trainers Mark Johnston and Ferdy Murphy, also has a surgery in Ripon.

"But Middleham is where the greatest concentration of our clients is located," he said. "Having a surgery at the equine centre also gives added value to the existing facility. Horses recovering from injuries can be both treated at the surgery and use the pool to aid their recovery."

Mr Stirk had the assistance of Margaret Shea, Business Link York and North Yorkshire adviser, who helped obtain a 30pc Business Development Fund Grant through North Yorkshire County Council.

"The new veterinary surgery brings a vital service to this area, where racehorse training and facilities for recreational riding represent a vital element in the local economy," said Mrs Shea.

Business Link York and North Yorkshire provides a single point of access to a wide range of help and advice for small to medium-sized businesses or people considering starting up in business.
