Shildon'S dreams of FA Cup glory ended yesterday despite a spirited performance from the lowest ranked team left in the competition.
The club - cheered on by 1,000 fans from County Durham - lost 7-2 in a memorable encounter at Notts County.
Albany Northern League Shildon found themselves three goals behind after only 18 minutes.
But a goal from James Middleton and a penalty from Garry Barnes gave them hope until their challenge was snuffed out by the Second Division side.
Darlington's Cup run also ended yesterday when the Quakers were humbled by Ryman Premier League side Hornchurch in David Hodgson's first game in charge.
Hodgson's side fell behind to a first-half penalty and, in a lacklustre display, created few chances before succumbing to a second goal.
Before the game, the newly-installed manager revealed the tie was a game the club could not afford to lose because of the financial rewards of a cup run, but later admitted the game proved: "There is a lot of work to do."
Hartlepool knocked Whitby out on Saturday, winning 4-0, and their reward is a second round tie at Burton Albion, the club managed by Nigel Clough, son of the legendary Brian, who started his managerial career at Victoria Park in the 1960s.
Away from the cup, it was a miserable day for Newcastle who were thumped 5-0 away to Chelsea in the Premiership.
