A COLLEGE balloon race in North Yorkshire has helped raise hundreds of pounds for an Army charity.
Scores of balloons were released in July as part of the festivities at Darlington College's Catterick campus open day.
Visitors were encouraged to sponsor a balloon in a race which raised £628.78 for the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF).
David Hassall, head of Darlington College at Catterick, presented North-East ABF fundraising director Brigadier Jeremy Gaskell with the cheque.
Mr Hassall said: "We like to support local charities at our open day events and had not helped the ABF before.
"We ask our staff who they think should benefit and this year it seemed appropriate to donate the money to the ABF."
The ABF helps members of the Army community deemed to be in need, whether they be serving or retired soldiers, their families or dependants, or members of the Territorial Army.
Grants are awarded through Army regiments and pay for a whole host of services, from disability and mental illnesses to specialist care.
