MORE than 200 secondary school pupils have received awards from old boy and Sheffield United footballer Michael Brown.

Parents, teachers and governors packed High Tunstall School, Hartlepool, for the ninth annual awards evening.

The awards for exceptional commitment to the school went to Amy Mottram of year seven, Hannah Pilcher, year eight, Jonathan Arnold, year nine, Grace Guerin, year ten, and Graham Garforth, year 11. Awards for outstanding service to the school in their final year were won by Stuart Bell and Jill Archbold.

The individual award for the best GCSE results by a girl went to Jennifer Chapman who achieved seven A* and five A grades. Gehan Wanduragala was the best performer among the boys with five A*, 6A and 1B grade. The number of pupils who gained five A* to C grades rose to 61.6 per cent this year, the school's best ever performance.

Michael Brown attended High Tunstall from 1987 to 1992 before joining Manchester City. He signed for Sheffield United in a £400,000 deal in 1999 and has played almost 170 first team games, scoring 34 goals.
