SIR Bobby Robson is keeping tightlipped over the surprise return of his stolen England caps.

The Newcastle United boss was devastated when burglars took the treasured mementoes from his home in Ipswich, Suffolk, earlier this year.

After a nine-month search, the 16 caps, which were rewarded for his appearances in the national football side, were returned at the weekend.

But Sir Bobby has refused to divulge how he recovered the priceless pieces.

"I am unable to comment as to the nature of how the caps were returned," he said. "But they are now in a safe place at St James' Park.

"I am delighted that my England caps have been returned to me - it is a great relief."

He said he has had discussions with Newcastle United chairman Freddie Shepherd over displaying them with his CBE and knighthood as football memorabilia at the club.

"I will be very happy to do that, as long as they are kept under lock and key," he said.

He uncovered the theft in February when he wanted to move them from Ipswich to his home in the North-East.

He issued an emotional appeal for their return and police launched a nationwide hunt.

At one stage, the Football Association offered to issue duplicates but Sir Bobby refused.

"I spoke to David Davies, at the FA, and he told me that if the caps were not found or returned, he would put it to the board about seeing if they could find replacements.

"Obviously, that was a lovely gesture, but they would not have been the originals so it would not have been the same for me."
