UNUSUAL accessories helped pupils at a County Durham school raise more than £100 for charity.

Pupils at Ingleton Primary School topped off their normal school uniforms with fancy headwear for Wear-a-Hat day on Friday.

Every hat-wearing child and member of staff made a donation towards Age Concern in Darlington, raising £124 in total.

The hat theme was chosen to promote the charity to encourage people to keep warm this winter.

Many of the pupils, aged between four and 11 years old, decorated their own hats while others donned cowboy hats, Easter bonnets and emergency services helmets.

Nine-year-old Matthew Simpson from Killerby added a Seventies' flair to the event with his hat featuring an electronic disco ball.

The children and staff paraded their hats at a special assembly and school secretary Katherine Chicken judged the competition for best hat in each class.

Headteacher Judith Presley said: "We were very impressed by the amount of thought and creativity the children put into their hats, and are delighted by the amount of money raised."
