A SPORTS and arts wing built at a cost of £483,000 has been opened at a Redcar school.

Newcomen Primary School has been fitted with a new arts studio, a sports hall for games, music and drama, soft play area and community area.

The new wing has been named after retired headteacher Frank Hudson who was in charge of the school from 1987 to 2001. He has unveiled a plaque at the building, which was funded under the Government's Space for Sport and Art initiative.

Headteacher Barbara Linthwaite said: "It is an absolutely fantastic facility for the community. Already we've had a great response.

"We're delighted to be able to invite Frank back for the official opening," she added. "This was his dream, his vision, his legacy. He was involved in the planning and it's only fitting that we should name the building in his honour."
